Understanding the treatment of waves in atmospheric models, Part I: The shortest resolved waves of the 1D linearized shallow water equations
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper provides an intercomparison of the dispersive and diffusive properties of several standard numerical methods applied to the 1D linearized shallow water equations without Coriolis term, including upwind and central finite-volume, spectral finite-volume, discontinuous Galerkin, spectral element, and staggered finite-volume. All methods are studied up to tenth-order accuracy, where possible. A consistent framework is developed which allows for direct intercomparison of the ability of these methods to capture the behavior of linear gravity waves. The Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition is also computed, which is important for gauging the stability of these methods, and leads to a measure of approximate equal error cost. The goal of this work is threefold: first, to determine the shortest wavelength which can be considered “resolved” for a particular method; second, to determine the effect of increasing the order of accuracy on the ability of a method to capture wave-like motion; third, to determine which numerical methods offer the best treatment of wavelike motion. Analytical Investigation of TM Surface Waves in 1D Photonic Crystals Capped by a Self-Focusing Left-Handed Slab
In this paper, the localized TM surface waves of a nonlinear self-focusingleft-handed slab sandwiched between a uniform medium and a one-dimensionalphotonic crystal (1D PC) is analytically investigated. Our method is based on the firstintegral of the nonlinear Maxwell's equations. For the TM surface waves, the presenceof two electric field components makes the analysis difficult. Therefore, we ...
متن کاملGeneration of Alfvén Waves by Small-Scale Magnetic Reconnection in Solar Spicules
Alfvén waves dissipation is an extensively studied mechanism for the coronal heating problem. These waves can be generated by magnetic reconnection and propagated along the reconnected field lines. Here, we study the generation of Alfvén waves at the presence of both steady flow and sheared magnetic field in the longitudinally density stratified of solar spicules. The initial flow is assumed to...
متن کاملVariational Principle for the Generalized KdV-Burgers Equation with Fractal Derivatives for Shallow Water Waves
The unsmooth boundary will greatly affect motion morphology of a shallow water wave, and a fractal space is introduced to establish a generalized KdV-Burgers equation with fractal derivatives. The semi-inverse method is used to establish a fractal variational formulation of the problem, which provides conservation laws in an energy form in the fractal space and possible solution structures of t...
متن کاملEvaluation of underwater acoustic propagation model (Ray theory) in a river using Fluvial Acoustic Tomography System
Underwater acoustics is widely used in many applications, such as oceanography, marine biology, hydrography, fishery, etc. Different models are introduced to simulate the underwater acoustic propagation in the oceans and the seas. In this study, the Ray Theory model is used to simulate the acoustic wave propagation in a shallow-freshwater river (Gono River) located in western part of Japan. The...
